DOUBLE TATE !!! ..........

Do you remember last Thursday week ? ..... the hottest day of the year so far ? Well, we went to Londinium, capital of England !!!

A lovely trip on the Thames clipper ..... get off at Bankside,

A little walk past St Paul's Cathedral .....

..... a glimpse of The Shard in that beautiful clear blue sky { remember clear blue skies ? }

A walk through Paternoster Square and under Temple Bar, which was the principal ceremonial entrance to the City of London ..... commissioned by King Charles 11, Temple Bar was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London, by Sir Christopher Wren between 1669 and 1672. In 1878 it was dismantled, piece by piece, and re erected in Theobald's Park { near where I live .... many a couple parked up there for a bit of how's your father including me !!!! } and languished there until 2004 when it was returned to the City of London.

 Into Tate Modern .....

Took this photograph through the window of Tate Modern ..... I thought it looked like a painting itself !

Saw some fabulous modern art, some of the old favourites, Monet, Dali, Hockney

BUT,

..... am I missing something with the above ? Maybe my arty blogging friend's can enlighten me ?

..... and this one that was made out of couscous ???? Maybe it's because I work better in bulgur wheat !!!! Am I a complete philistine ?

Anyway, back on the boat to Millbank and Tate Britain.

A beautiful building

..... and much art to peruse !!

Walked to a lovely Italian restaurant for dinner and then home. A great day out and we walked nearly 10 miles !!!!

  1. A lot of 'artists' sit at home thinking 'What hasn't been done before?', as if innovation is all important. Well it's not, as those photos illustrate. Why The Tate should give them wall space, I really don't know; they'd be better in a seedy Pub'.

    1. Oh good ...... it’s not just me then Cro ?!!!!!! There was a lot of it with a load of pretentious writing about them !!! Still, it gives me something to talk about ! XXXX

  2. It will always make you think and it will always be a talking point. Answers to what is it and is it art are whatever you care to give it I suppose, like you say, loads of the type of pretentious writing on it provided by the Tate. The challenge of it actually appeals to me. There are no answers except I know I would not want to always look at canvases, flat paintings and Hay Wains and nothing else. Do you remember the fuss about Carl Andre's Pile of Bricks in the 1970s and the criticism the Tate got for buying it?! xx

    1. I do and I understand what you’re saying. I don’t want to just see everything the same but too many blank canvases and I lose interest !!!! XXXX

  3. Ever since Art became a commodity to invest in, galleries try to convince artistically illiterate corporations that stuff like this is good art. They are so good at it that even the artists begin to believe it.

    1. Once someone has paid loads of money for it, the last thing they want to happen is a general loss of confidence in the artist. This is why it is no longer possible to authoritatively pronounce something either good or bad.

    2. I think the public feel they have to like it as it’s in Tate Modern .... I don’t !!! XXXX

  5. What a day out! You can't do that where I live. No strolling around for ten miles. Too bad you have to drive everywhere. I would have loved that day.

    1. Ah yes Donna but you have sunnier summers than we do that can be relied upon ! We are lucky that we live in the countryside but it’s only 20 minutes on the train to London..... the best of both worlds and you can walk all day in London ... well, you can walk all day wherever you go ! XXXX

    1. It was a lovely day Maria ...... hotter than anywhere in Europe that day. Horrid day today though.
We were out with friends that day ..... one had ravioli, one swordfish, my husband had crab and I had crab linguine ...... it’s a lovely Italian restaurant, tucked away in the city near St Paul’s cathedral ..... it’s been there for years and is so nice. XXXX

  7. Great catch “through the window” Jackie . . .
One thing about art . . . not all is understood, found appealing . . .
    But finding what does . . . isn’t that grand . . ,
Sounds like my kind of day trip, the miles too!

  8. Jackie beautiful photos - imagine the memories when you read this post years from now - of wonderful places in London, a city nobody ever not likes!!! Like you, I could walk all day in the city and never be bored. Even in the rain it's wondrous, and there's so much history at every turn. So glad you experienced the great views in sunshine with blue skies, that was a special treat I know.
The photo from the window is awesome - I could see it framed - it would look so much better than those sad looking 'rags' or emptiness! BTW, I prefer my couscous in a bowl with veggies!!!!

Lovely post - and thanks for the hair comment - always have admired your golden tresses and yes, I'll 'keep growing' if I can get through the summer!

Hugs from hot and sunny North Carolina - the garden calls this morning.

    1. Thanks Mary ...... and persevere with your hair .... you just have to get past that awkward length !!!!
We know London pretty well as we are only 20 minutes away and go often and I worked there as well. It is my favourite city in the world but I know I’m biased !!!
Wet and windy here so I’m envious ..... enjoy the sun. Hugs back. XXXX

  10. Hello Jacqueline,
A beautiful account of a very special day. Your photos are wonderful. I will reserve my opinion on the tattered canvas and the couscous du jour.

    Have a great week

  12. You made looking at landmarks so beautiful and interesting. Walking 10 miles is super impressive. I think the fartherest I've ever walked is the 3-Mile Jogging Track in Memorial Park here in Houston.

  13. Those art works that baffled you are also baffling me. I don't recognise the artists at all. And I also fail to see anything special or interesting in them. Still, as Rachel says, they make you think and they're a talking point. I enjoy puzzling over artistic experiments, because after all art can't stand still, it has to keep going in new directions.

Jenny and I had a good look round Tate Britain and the Tate Modern in early January, also the Barbican Art Gallery and the Serpentine Gallery. Lots of wonderful and very varied art.

    1. I do understand that art is there for many reasons but I didn’t find much to like or think about in those three !!!!! BUT, we still like to go and look at it all ! Nothing nicer than a trip to London and a look at some art. XXXX
